The Lion and The Little Red Bird by Elisa Kleven
![Picture](/uploads/4/6/0/9/46090021/9073326.jpg?250)
This is one of my favorites! This story has beautiful illustrations that help to tell a fun story about a lion that has a magical tail that changes color every day according to what the lion did that day. The little red bird follows the lion in wonder trying to figure out the magic behind the tail. He comes to find that the tail isn't as much magical as it artistic.

The True story of the 3 Little Pigs by jon scieszka
This satirical book has a charm to it while it helps to describe this classic tale through the eyes of another character. In this version the Big Bad Wolf might not be quite as big and bad as we have all been 'led to believe'. Students will love the funny change in the story. This book is a great story to help teach about different points of view. Ages: 5-8 |
Blackout by John Rocco
Blackout is a story about what happens when all the power goes out. I enjoy this book because the story is about how people often forget to take time for things in life--especially time for family. This story shows what happens when everyone takes some times to relax and enjoy the peace when everything is stopped by a blackout. Caldecott Honors Award Ages: 4-7 |

Nana in the City by lauren Castillo
This 2015 Caldecott winning picture book tells a story about a young boy and his Nana exploring the city. While the young boy is rather hesitant to explore such a big city, Nana has a brilliant idea to put him at ease. A superhero is never afraid after all and what do superheros need: a cape of course! This story is all about concurring our fears.

LaRue Across America by Mark Teague
![Picture](/uploads/4/6/0/9/46090021/6408895_orig.jpg)
This story book share a certain charm as it is told through the eyes of a dog named Ike. Ike has come unique views on situations and is able to share his opinions and thoughts through his writing in letters. In this case, Ike is writing post cards to his neighbor to keep her up to date on the happenings while driving across America with his neighbor’s cats. The personality of the dog is quite humorous and shares a higher level vocabulary that will be good for readers to be introduced to. The pictures are quite original in that there is often a spilt between bright colors and a grey scale in pages. The pictures very much play off of the words of the story, but help to see some different points of view and definitely more detail. I would recommend this book for the later year of first grade and second grade. I would suggest this book as a read aloud considering the larger vocabulary and the satirical point of view from Ike.

Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown
![Picture](/uploads/4/6/0/9/46090021/2578605.jpg?250)
Flat Stanley is a picture book in which is mainly told through its words. With limited black and white pictures, the illustrations simply act to help tell the story and paint a picture from the words. The pictures add to the story through creating a mental picture of what was not described in detail. This book is a different form of picture book compared to many others I have discussed on this website because it is a small chapter book. There are five chapters all telling a story about a boy named Stanley and his adventures after a board falls on him at night and he becomes flat. While this book does not focus solely on writing letters, this book provides the opportunity for a great activity in the classroom. In the book, Stanley is mailed to family friends in California. Because of this connection, students can learn to mail a character and have friends or family share pictures and letters about all of Stanley’s adventures. This book is a great book for a letter theme and will provide the students with an opportunity to learn about letters and their different uses. Beyond this, the book is a great read that is full of different adventures that will greatly interest its readers. This book is great for first grade through early third grade. I would encourage this as a read aloud for the younger grades, but as progressing to third grade students could read this book independently.
