This transitional chapter book is great for younger readers. The book contains a fun story as well as short chapters along with illustrations on every few pages to help the students transitions out of smaller picture books. The story is all about a fox who has been stealing from some of the farmers in the area. The three farmers decide they are going to work together to catch this Mr. Fox, but the fox is not willing to give up so easily. He is going to need to think quick and come up with a fantastic plan when the farmers have him surrounded. I would recommend this book for second and third grade students.
This series chapter book is a great introductory chapter book for young students, especially young girls. Students relate to the book because it shares a story of a young girl around the age of the readers who goes through some real life situations that students may go through as well. In this book, Junie B. Jones is captain field day and shares all about her adventure on trying to lead her room to be victors of the field day. This is a great read for second to early fourth grade.
This children's poetry book uses the text to share a story style poem. The black and white illustrations help to expand upon the text and is a good way to get students engaged with poetry, especially those who have a challenging time imagining what the text says. I would recommend this book for first grade through third grade students.
This children's book contains a collection of different poems geared toward younger children. The benefit of this book is that the poems range in the topic and the style of the poem. Many of the poems, though, do incorporate rhymes which tend to catch the attention of younger readers. Also, the poems have pictures that accompany the words that help bring meaning to the words especially for introducing poems to young students. I would recommend this book for second and third grade students.
This historical fiction book shares a story about a family that follows the move West in America. This family packs up everything from their house in Wisconsin and prepares to move to the prairie. This story shares their journey to Kansas and finding their happiness in their new home. This book is a great book fro a fourth grade classroom.
This historical fiction book shares a story of the time of the holocaust. There is a story of two young girls and their families living in Denmark when the Nazis were taking over their country. When it seems to become dangerous for the Jewish family, Ellen stays with the Johansen family and pretends to be their in order to stay safe. This is a story of the brave people that took part in the resistance in an attempt to save their loved ones. This is a good book for a fourth grade classroom.
This realistic fiction is a fun story about a family enjoying time together some family travels several hours to enjoy time together. The text simply explains what happens throughout the book and focuses on telling the story of when and how everything takes place. Personally, I found the pictures to be the best part of this book because they added a lot of personality to the book and helped develop the characters and the story. I did enjoy this book because there is a lot of potential for student to add in their own elements to the story about what they think they did in their spare time. I would consider having a writing activity with a 'missing page' in which the student could add in their own elements to the story. I would recommend this story for first or second grade--potentially third grade if there is a writing assignment based off the reading.
This realistic fiction is a beautiful story about a young girl who makes a promise to her grandfather to do three things: go to faraway places, move back to a place near the sea, and to make the world more beautiful. Throughout her life, Miss. Rumphius completes everything, but as she gets older she realizes there is a third part to the promise she needs to complete. This is about her journey and life and finding her way to make the world more beautiful. The pictures really contribute to the setting of the story as well as developing the character. Because this book has some more advanced messages and more text, I would recommend this books for late first grade through third grade.
The modern fantasy is a great story about a man named Mr. Morris Lessmore who found this amazing library where the books were alive with characters and stories to share. The book is all about Mr. Morris' love for the books and the stories within them. This is a cute book to get students excited about books and to explain how there are all kinds of books and stories and that we need all of them. Then the cycle continues when Mr. Morris moves on and a young girl takes his place. The illustrations are incredibly playful and beautiful. The books take on their own characters and you can see the importance of detail in the illustrations. I would recommend this books for first and second grade students.
This modern fantasy is an adorable book about the the friendship between a rabbit and a young magician. One day during their act, the rabbit was chased about from his best friend. Luckily the rabbit gets away safely, but ends up on a small journey to find its best friend. This book has fun pictures that are all black and white and help to portray everything that is happening in the text. The is a large portion of the emotions shown through the illustrations. I would recommend this book for kindergarten threw first grade.
